Food History & Humor was founded and developed in August 2012 by Matt and Mel, stemming from an earlier concept detailing food history with a dash of laughter thrown in. Enjoy!
Matt, hailing from mid-Michigan, is a licensed EMT and a paramedic student. After growing up in central Michigan in the 1990s, he learned how to appreciate the art of snark and sarcasm, thanks to his Dutch Catholic family. In 2009, he packed up and moved 500 miles away to become a civil engineer. In the meantime, Matt became involved with his campus’s emergency response team and became a medical first responder. In 2010, Matt decided to change his course of study and instead transferred to study emergency medicine full time, and earned his EMT license in 2011. After starting to cook at the age of 11 as a stress reliever, he has continued to learn more about cooking techniques. Ten years later, he has won small cooking competitions and is regularly delegated to make Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.
Mel is a freelance editor and writer in Seattle, Washington. She grew up in northwestern Michigan and got an M.A. in Late Medieval and Early Modern European History from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and spent the better part of the ’90s teaching college history in Santa Cruz and Seattle. She has written food articles and restaurant reviews for various Seattle publications and spends way too much of her free time reading food blogs and watching cooking shows. Her fascination with food history began when she he combined her obsessions with food and history and started researching and cooking medieval European recipes. She has faith that everything in life can be improved with humor.
